Good Intentions ➺ Side By Side 3-Pack by Andrew Burchell
Side By Side Winemakers Selection 3-Pack by Andrew Burchell
Winemakers are equally enthusiastic about the wines they craft as the wines they drink. No surprises here.
Our Side by Side series offers a glance at what our favourite producers are drinking when they're not picking, pressing or putting their own wines to bottle.
This time round, Andrew Burchell selects three wines that hold a special place in his heart. Pull up a seat, and drink like the winemakers do.
No superfluous superlatives here, just minimal intervention wine with oodles of charisma– proof that forgoing frills is far from boring, good that’s better than best.
The word rock-star gets bandied about too often in the wine world, but husband and wife team, Andrew and Louise of Good Intentions Wine Co. lay a decent claim on the term with their palpable passion for all things wine, soil and volcanic rock related.
Heading up a family winery with a heap of heart, Andrew and Louise enjoyed their first vintage in 2014 alongside the birth of their first daughter. No small undertaking, but the results of the long days and sleepless nights are ongoingly evident. You can taste the love in every bottle (and just a little of the blood, sweat and tears).
"We’ve just completed pruning and are really excited to see the development and progression of our close planted home vineyard 'Lake of Fire'. It’s been a long journey with this vineyard, and we now have three wines resting with their release set sometime in the next two years. A Riesling, Cabernet Franc and a white Cabernet Franc, which is really exciting for us!" — Andrew Burchell
“The potential of Mount Gambier Chardonnay really excites me, particularly off the volcanic soils where our vineyards are planted. The salinity, natural acidity and weight are so well balanced that you get a complex Chardonnay full of minerality and purity. A rare and unique Australian Chardonnay that’s looking like Jura meets Chablis in style.”

“Bress Winery—the first winery I ever worked for—made a Chablis from Domaine des Malandes. The late Adam Marks introduced me to Chablis, my first bottle being from this producer, and I never looked back. Precision and perfection.”

“If it already hasn’t, Barolo is going to take the world by storm. This is a wine I’ve grown to love. It’s hard for me to say no when this allocation comes into the country. My timeless love of Pinot Noir combined with my new found love for Cabernet makes this Nebbiolo a beautiful choice as the flavour profile sits somewhere in between.”
