Winemakers are equally enthusiastic about the wines they craft as the wines they drink. No surprises here. Our Side by Side series offers a glance at what our favourite producers drink when they're not picking, pressing or putting their own wines to bottle.
This time round, Anna Martens selects three wines that have stayed with her throughout her winemaking journey. Pull up a seat, and drink like the winemakers do.
“I have been involved in making wine for over 30 years, the last 20 years of those at our small domain “Vino di Anna” on Mt Etna, Sicily. Along the way I have experienced and learnt so much and continue to do so. Working with Mother Nature and on the land is a pleasure, a privilege, hard work, and, of course, at times a challenge. I have always found that creating wine and sharing it with others is a beautiful vehicle that opens conversations about life, music, food, culture and art.
I have chosen wines from these two producers to be included with our Nord-Sud Pinot Noir as drinking them brings back great memories from the early days of my winemaking journey. Both producers have been fundamental in shaping the landscape of Australian Pinot Noir and it is always a pleasure to open a bottle of their wine.”

Stephen’s passion for his vines, experimental nature and drive created a big impression on me. Whilst I loved his Chardonnays, it was his Pinot Noirs that I was drawn too; their complexity yet lightness, their silky elegant tannins- thought provoking, inspirational wines.
Even though the ownership of this iconic domain has changed, the land still delivers fruit of outstanding quality.”

“Timo’s wines were two of the Pinot Noirs that Eric and I sat up all night drinking at The Melbourne Supper Club the eve before we got married. Having flown into Melbourne from Europe, in the early hours of January 2008, Mayer’s Pinot Noir from the “Bloody Hill” vineyard was enthusiastically drunk that evening and brings back fond memories.
The wine was light, perfumed, vibrant with a savoury spice. A great wine to have enjoyed before a swim down at St Kilda and a quick trip to the Old Treasury Building.”
