Sven Joschke

Sven Joschke

Natural Wine by Numbers

Why Sven Joschke?

South Australia has a thriving and diverse winemaking industry. Long-established wineries with generations of history sit alongside bright-eyed newcomers, who usually have little more than an idea and, if they’re lucky, a rickety old basket press. Then there is everyone in between. The challenge is to break through the noise. Sven Joschke has done just that. And when you taste his wines, you’ll realise it’s not by accident.

WINEMAKER

Sven Joschke has a fairly unusual backstory. After working as a chartered accountant interstate for 15 years, he returned to South Australia to pursue his dream of making wine. Having worked alongside Peter Schell of Spinifex and Jason Schwarz of Schwarz Wine Co. and abroad in the Jura region France, a region known for its wild, funky and unpredictable skin contact whites, Sven’s own brand is a blend of everything he has learned, and then something that can’t be taught.
While still relatively new in his career under his namesake label, he has already garnered accolades from some of Australia’s top winemaking critics. The future looks bright!

Vineyards

Given the richness that each South Australian winemaking region has to offer, it’s no surprise that many young producers (and even some older ones!) choose to be multi-regional. Instead of relying on the same vineyards every year, they can work with a network of growers to pick up the most exciting varieties that each region has to offer. In Sven’s case, it has helped showcase his creativity and raw talent, using grapes from Adelaide Hills, Barossa Valley and Langhorne Creek to maximum effect.
Winemaking Philosophy

There are many common threads that appear across wines Sven Joschke wines, all from the minimal intervention and natural leaning schools of thought. Hand picking, wild yeast, whole bunch fermentation, old French oak maturation, unfined and unfiltered and single vineyard wines are all common traits, no matter where the grapes were sourced from. As a nice touch, Sven acknowledges the growers from each vineyard, as without their hard work year round, the wines wouldn’t end up anywhere near as good once they reach the shelf.
