Alkina

Alkina

Teamwork Makes The Dream Work.

Born in 2015, Alkina began with the purchase of Barossa loyalist Les Kalleske’s vineyard by Argentinian vigneron Alejandro Bulgheroni. Appointing Amelia Nolan as winemaker (and GM)  and Johnny Schuster as vineyard manager, Alejandro wasted no time getting his hands dirty, leading the charge into just what lies beneath the surface - and planting his first new vines accordingly.

Without so much as a ‘good morning’, a visit to the Alkina estate and cellar door in Greenock tells you everything you need to know about the Alkina ethos. Idealists in the best possible way, it’s all about, care, nature and experience.

Grade A Greenock

There are producers that discuss terroir, and then there are producers who live it. Alkina are the definition of the latter. Spiritually and geographically based in the Barossa’s historic town of Greenock, Alkina’s Western Barossa site is a melting pot of different soil compositions, intersected by the native flora and fauna lifeline that is Greenock Creek.

At Alkina, terroir is explored to its fullest via the Polygon Project. Working in collaboration with Chilean terroir expert Pedro Parra, the team worked with Pedro to test, identify and map the unique micro-terroirs of the Alkina site, revealing over 50. That’s a lotta nuance.

If they were to name four predominant features of the vineyard’s soil, you’re looking at Schist (metamorphic rock) that wraps around varying degrees and measures of clay, iron and limestone. This tech intel provides endless possibilities for matching and experimenting with different soil and varietal combinations - like matchmaking, but without the guesswork.

Thanks to their small scale, all wines are made at home on the estate in a renovated 1850s barn, loaded with those modern-meets-medieval vessels such as Italian clay amphorae, French concrete eggs and gvevri from Georgia that allow terroir and the fruit it nurtures to hold centre stage.

The name Alkina itself is Ngadjuri name, a female name for ‘moon’ or ‘moonlight’, and a real penny drop moment as you explore the range. Certified organic and biodynamic, in their words, ‘wine is essentially a combination of soil, rocks, plants and climate’.

Throwing the focus on people and community, the ‘Kin’ range ties the natural variation of the estate to the progressive thinkers, creators and innovators of Greenock and the wider Barossa region.

Bursting with life from young vines and minimal intervention in the winery, the thrilling fruit of the Kin Shiraz and Grenache bring their ethos to the glass, while Birdsong and Night Sky tap into the spirit of the natural joys after which they are named.
