Barbera, like this 2021 tour-de-force presented under the Protero label, does exceedingly well in South Australia. Pomegranate molasses and cranberry zing. High-toned fruit is balanced by earthy complexity and plushest, plushest tannin, with an aroma profile that leans the same way amaro does. Stephen Pannell knows what grows, and leans all the way in.
