Bernice Ong and Julian Forwood spent decades immersed in Burgundy and Piedmont before going rogue and starting their own thing in McLaren Vale in 2012. The Gamay comes from the Adelaide Hills — cooler, higher, built for exactly this variety. Tight and pretty out of the gate, give it some air and it opens up: ripe raspberry, chalky lift, pink peppercorns, nutmeg, mountain herbs. The kind of red you reach for when you want something with genuine personality but nothing that requires a special occasion.
