Serralunga's got a reputation for muscle — Margheria is the cru that could change that.
The Pira family spent decades selling their Serralunga fruit off in bulk before deciding they should be the ones bottling it. Brothers Gianpaolo, Romolo and Claudio now run the estate, working three of the commune's top cru sites — Margheria one of them.
One and a half hectares, south-facing, calcareous clay under 60-plus-year-old vines. Fermented and macerated in stainless tanks for 12 to 15 days, then two years resting in 25hl Slavonian botti (old wood, nothing new showing off). Red currant, dark cherry, licorice, a savoury tar streak — tannins firm, but not fighting you.
