Don Giovanni’s last drink before being dragged to hell was a glass of Marzemino. Make of that what you will. Marco Bertoni has been farming the hills above Modena biodynamically since the early nineties, well before it was a thing, growing indigenous varieties along the Secchia river while the region’s industrial wineries looked the other way. The Berzmein is 100% Marzemino — eight days on skins, spontaneous ferment, twelve months in old oak. Smooth and juicy, deep purple, with black cherry, wildflowers, dusty earth and a trace of espresso. A little smoky. A little brooding. Entirely itself.
