Cas' Al' Mat is the work of two mates, Matteo and Alessio, chasing Timorasso in the Tortona hills instead of settling for the usual Piedmont reds. Vineyards sit on calcareous clay thick with Tortonian marl, farmed the lutte raisonnée way — organic, by hand. Imported as a special project with Giorgio de Maria, his Piccolo Derthona is the young, early-drinking cut of the grape, made to drink now rather than the cellar. White peach, lemon pith, a chalky mineral zing. Fresh, direct, immediately refreshing.
