Guest Selector ➺ Alice Chugg
A LOVER OF LO-FI
Alice Chugg is restaurant manager and sommelier of Hobart’s beloved neighbourhood restaurant, Templo.
Having slowly dipped her toes into the wine pool in her early years as a waiter, it wasn’t long until she found herself writing her first wine list for renowned restaurant Ethos. It was here that she discovered her love for lo-fi wine.
Nominated for Gourmet Traveller’s Young Sommelier of the Year and participating in the Somms of the World program in 2017, her humble knowledge and welcoming hospitality has not gone unnoticed, and since honing her skills at Tassie haunts like Ettie’s and Franklin, Alice has found her home at the 20-seat Italian-European restaurant which champions local and sustainably sourced produce.
Her fun-loving and honest approach to wine is what we love most, and we couldn’t be happier to have her as this month’s Guest Selector.

“This pack doesn't follow any rhyme or reason - just delicious, textural wines I myself enjoy drinking. A bit of an homage to the stylistic wines found at Templo, and wines to be enjoyed with friends.”

LATTA JURASSIQUE BLANC CHARDONNAY 2020
“'This is my kind of Chardonnay - salty and tangy! One whiff and I start salivating. Literally. It was one of the first wines I opened after having my son at Christmas, I had legitimately been thinking about the moment I could have more than a taste of it for months. Another total knock-out wine from Owen Latta.”
SCINTILLA ‘ELEKTRIK’ CHARDONNAY / SAVAGNIN 2020
“I love all of James’ wines, I think they just keep getting better and better. The most appropriately named wine ever, it really is so electric and alive. Wildly easy to drink but still complex and interesting. A bottle I'd rather not share to be honest. Petitioning for more Savagnin to be made in Australia if it can look this good!”
OLEK BONDONIO PET NAT NV
“Sunshine in a glass! Just looking at this bottle makes me thirsty, luckily the contents are so thirst quenching! Sometimes I get a bit sick of pet nat, this definitely makes me re-think that sentiment. It's a bit more of a serious expression. A bottle to drink nice and cold on a sunny evening with friends. Preferably outside.”
MICHAEL GINDL LITTLE BUTEO GRÜNER VELTLINER 2020
“I love crisp, high acid and textural white wines and this one definitely fits that profile. Austrian Gruner Veltliner - just to prove I do like non-Italian wines too. I think I've poured every vintage of this wine I could get my hands on over the last 6 years, it holds a special place in my heart!”
OCCHIPINTI SP68 NERO D'AVOLA / FRAPPATO 2020
“The SP68 Rosso was one of the first natural wines that I really fell in love with and introduced me to Sicillian wines. I now worship at the altar of Arianna Occhipinti. You'd be hard pressed to find someone who doesn't like this wine, but don't share it with too many people!”
FORADORI LEZER TEROLDEGO 2020
“Elisabetta Foradori can do no wrong in my eyes. The Lezer is maybe a little less serious than some of her other wines but seriously juicy, slurpable and fun. A really cool example of Teroldego, different to what I'm used to.”
