Luigi Giordano
It sounds like a spell: Luigi Giordano Barbaresco. Making Piemonte perfection for over 90 years, Luigi has certainly got our wands a-waving. Now in fourth generation hands, the charm is holding strong; knock-off-in-a-night Nebbs of course, but also, great expression of Piedmont’s ‘other guys’.
To cut to the heart of them, start in the Cavanna cru – here, pioneering winemaker Luigi Giordano first began crafting eponymous wines built on his father, Giovanni’s, vinous legacy.
A shining gem in the family treasure chest.
What is now the Luigi Giordano Estate spans seven hectares of Barbaresco, counting within that terrain several of Piedmont’s most hallowed crus; Montestefano, Asili, Ovello, Ronchi and Cars included.
Cavanna’s the special one though, closest to Barbaresco village, with laminated sedimentary soils telling a story of oceans rising and receding over millennia. Since 1971, the Giordanos have produced the only single-vineyard designated Cavanna cru of its kind on the market, a shining gem in the family treasure chest.
Naturally the Nebbiolo that is synonymous with Barbaresco dominates, but the label treats several staple grapes of Italian winemaking tradition with equal reverence. Dolcetto and Barbera enjoy focused attention, alongside lesser known Freisa, and even white grape Arneis – all flourishing under a perceptive hand that discerns, and prizes, the diversity of each style.

Crushing an icy Italian white in the height of Aussie summer just feels so right. Across all seasons, we love the wines for their intense fragrance, and the delicate tannin present in the reds.
DOCG status by no means promises perfection, but these guys deliver on their reputation in spades. Now in the custody of his daughters and grandson, Luigi Giordano wines are a drinkable advertisement for the merits of hand-off minimal intervention winemaking in the Italian tradition.
You’ll want to make sure you get your hands firmly wrapped around them.
