Brave New Wine

Brave New Wine

Consistently Inconsistent

Brave New Wines do what they say on the bottle. Being ‘brave’ and ‘new’ in this industry can be a dangerous combination. Super small batch, esoteric blends and unconventional winemaking can be a recipe for disaster or success, depending on who is pulling the strings.

Luckily, the duo behind Brave New Wine, husband and wife Andries and Yoko Lüscher-Mostert, have all the skill, creativity and passion needed to pull off wines that are both ‘brave’ and ‘new’. Andries has been working across Australia’s winemaking regions for over 25 years, starting Brave New Wine as a side project to satiate his need for a creative outlet while working at conventional wineries.

It Takes Courage

Unsurprisingly, his experimental, micro batch wines became increasingly popular, leading him to embark on the project full time with Yoko on board as both assistant and label designer. Considering that every wine receives a new wine label design by Yoko each vintage, anyone in wine marketing will consider this desire to always be ‘new’ especially ‘brave’. This adds to the charm of the brand. Every wine is limited and specific to the year it was made. Together, they show the evolution of the brand and the people behind it.

As you might imagine, don’t expect to find your traditional fare here – these are made using lo-fi, minimal intervention methods from some excellent sites across Western Australia’s Great Southern region.

In lieu of a vineyard of their own – although that is the eventual goal – they source varieties to make wines that they find exciting and hope others share their enthusiasm. No fining, filtration or additions are using (except for a little sulphur, sometimes) to keep the wines honest. Given this winemaking style, they are best enjoyed upon release – enjoy them. It’s what they’re made for.

At its core, Brave New Wine is a husband and wife making the wines they like to drink. Every year, something will change. By committing to always something new – it shows growth, honesty and – *beat* – bravery.

Be brave – embrace the new.
