Is Rioja the most universally beloved Spanish red? We won't speak for the universe, but it's dang hard to find fault in examples like this. Brimming with lush red berries and rich chocolatey, earthy notes. Bitter coffee cuts through the hint of caramel sweetness. Peppery but fresh. The Tempranillo fruit grows in vineyards in Págano-Laguardia, in the province of Álava—climatic utopia for the thick-skinned, black-hued bunches that are so tolerant of heat. Aged over 16mo in both new American oak and twice-used French barrels, there's stacks of secondary character and complexity to unpack. Sip and ponder the universe for yourself.
