Barry and Jan Morey have been farming on the outskirts of Beechworth since 1985 — granitic soils, forest on two sides, Demeter-certified biodynamic, tiny production. The Gamay is half cold macerated, 20% whole bunch, two weeks on skins, eleven months in old French barrique, with 10% Pinot Noir in the blend. Wild cherry, red currant, dried herbs, tobacco, a dusting of earth. Upright tannins, long brambly finish. Cult for a reason.
