Being in the middle gets a bad rap, but for Athletes of Wine it's the whole point β well-rounded, not middling, the wine equivalent of a decathlete rather than a one-trick pony. This Sangiovese is built in two halves: one whole-berry ferment for pure, upfront fruit, one destemmed and crushed for structure, with a splash of Malbec bringing blackberry depth and sturdier tannin to the blend. Blackberry, raspberry, plum, anise, tobacco leaf and woody spice, with sour cherry acidity keeping the medium-weight palate juicy and tannins fine on the finish. Smashable, yet never simple.
