The Discoveries

Charlotte Hardy’s attitude to wine is magnetically wholesome for someone so talented.

New Zealand-born and beginning her career as a veterinary nurse, a cameo in a friend’s vineyard one balmy summer changed it all. Diving into wine science study before learning the ropes at Craggy Range, two decades worth of purple hands and teeth have landed her well and truly on her feet in South Australia.

She’s taken the scene by storm with her warmth, naturally-guided ethos and meticulous yet laid-back, soul-driven wines; no easy task in what’s often a pressure cooker of yearly routine at the whim of the ultimate taskmasker - mother nature. Hardy makes it work – she makes it look easy.

Taking home the Young Gun of Wine trophy for 2021, Hardy’s Adelaide Hills Semillon, Shiraz and Pinot Noir (among other things) have caused a stir since their first vintages under the Charlotte Dalton label in 2015. That Pinot particularly has always been hard to come by, selling out long before we can say PHWOAR.

Smile Because It’s Happening

While those Adelaide Hills vineyards remain the foundation for Charlotte Dalton Wines, a move to the Fleurieu has Hardy broadening the brand’s outlook, opening The Joinery Wine Room on Port Elliot’s The Strand along with husband and fellow winemaker Ben Cooke in late 2019, a venture that has further deepened their family’s ability to prioritise lifestyle and move as a unit. They might start the day with a spot of fishing, or close The Joinery early for a swim in Horseshoe Bay.
