Ciro Picariello

Ciro Picariello

If Campania’s claim to fame is San Marzano tomatoes and Mozzarella di Bufala, consider us convinced. This is a region that knows flavour, and few show it better than Ciro Picariello. Hailed the greatest producer of Fiano—making this the greatest Fiano in the world—Ciro is capable of turning any grape into something quite special.

Prestige comes naturally in this corner of southern Italy. Home to no fewer than 4 top-tier DOCG appellations, the region's volcanic soils nourish some seriously specky old vines. It’s a no-brainer.

Right in the heart of Avellino’s white-wine country, folded into the Irpinian hills, Ciro’s small seven-hectare estate punches far above its weight. Four hectares of Fiano and Aglianico cling to slopes rooted in volcanic, calcareous clay and pietra di rame (copper-stone) soils, while the remaining three hectares—planted to Fiano and Greco—sit 10 km away in clay-rich Montefredane.
Most admired for his Fiano di Avellino and Greco di Tufo, Ciro is a master of white varieties. Fiano, one of Italy’s truly age-worthy whites, develops notes of beeswax and lavender honey over time, often drawing comparisons to Loire Valley Chenin Blanc. Bottles with age are hard to come by, though, so you’d be wise to squirrel away the younger vintages while you can.

Then there’s Greco. Structured, mineral and quietly powerful, it thrives in these soils, delivering wines with tension, texture and serious longevity—the perfect foil to Ciro’s lifted, expressive Fianos. Low-intervention, terroir-driven, and highly memorable. Iconic.
