With hundreds of red grape varieties in existence all over the world, the options for red wines are seemingly endless. While production techniques vary greatly, all red wines consist of the same fundamental principles – namely, grapes are fermented, with colour and tannins extracted from the skins. There are so many variables that can impact the resulting wine – climate, geography, variety and production all play an integral role. Herein lies the joy of wine. Comparing and contrasting wines from the same vineyard from different years can have wildly different results in the glass, let alone wines from different producers.
