Margaret River based vigneron, L.A.S. Vino is at the pointy end of the regions ‘new guard’, producing a range of superb, purely-fruited minimal intervention wines that speak clearly of their roots in Western Australia’s most iconic wine region.
Established in 2013 L.A.S. (Luck, Art & Science) is the brainbchild of Nic Peterkin.
The bloodline is strong here. Nic is the son of the founder of the legendary Pierro Wines, Dr Mike Peterkin and Shelly Cullen of the Cullen Wine family.
With vintages at Pierro, Herdade do Esporão in Portugal and Casa Madero in Mexico were added to his quiver as he studied science and commerce before completing a masters in oenology at the University of Adelaide.
It was on the travels that interspersed Nic’s travels that the idea for L.A.S. Vino came into being; the idea to produce delicious, lo-fi wines, quite different to the wines of the status quo, yet wines that spoke clearly of their origins in Margaret River.
“People want a reflection of who they are in what they drink,” he says. “They don’t want mass produced crap. They want handcrafted wines with story and personality.” – Nic Peterkin, Winemaker
There is an undercurrent of experimentation, awe and wonder that underpins all of Nic’s wines at L.A.S. Vino. Tweaks to the classic Margaret River fare……Chardonnay, be it wild-ferment from the famed Wilyabrup or extended skin-contact, textural and flowy from the same sub-region, the results are rad.
Whole berry, barrique fermented Cabernet Sauvignon, textural, biodynamic Chenin Blanc, Cabernet Franc, Ferguson Valley Grenache, the delicious ‘Pirate Blend’ from Portuguese varieties: Touriga Nacional, Tinta Cao and Souzao and other delicious tid-bits all get the same considered and intuitive winemaking approach.
We’d call Nicolas Peterkin a rising star but he’s already risen if you get our drift and is one of the most exciting young vignerons in Australia.
If you seek gorgeous, lively wines sourced from organic & biodynamic vineyards with minimal additions, the wines of L.A.S. Vino should be at the top of your list.
