Emma Farrelly has her finger firmly on the pulse of Perth’s wine industry. Emma’s unrivalled passion for the industry has time and time again produced award-winning wine lists across top venues in Perth and now finds herself at the Wine Helm of Perth’s iconic heritage listed hospitality mecca, State Buildings.
Her contagious dedication to breathing new life into Perth’s wine scene led to her being awarded Gourmet Traveller’s Sommelier of the Year 2019, the first Western Australian recipient. This award not only recognised Farrelly’s 16-year dedication to the wine and service industry, but that Perth, under her matriarchal guidance, has become a haven for wine lovers.
We love that Emma is firmly committed to the future of Australia’s wine industry, regularly featured on many boards, committees and judging panels as well as championing for biodynamic farming and a strong focus on celebrating small producers.
For Emma, a wine needs to have a place and a story to earn a spot on her famed lists and focuses on the small details about regions and/or producers because she feels that’s what drives people to a wine and how they remember it by. Therefore, we couldn’t think of a better person to call on to create a Mixed Pack of some of their favourite wines for Sometimes Always, and keeping in true spirit, has chosen six wines that sing praise of WA’s diverse array of hidden gem producers, from the Perth Hills to the Great Southern.
The jewel in the Perth wine crown.
Emma has also kindly given us insight in why she chose these particular wines and some of the stories of where and how she discovered them.

Featuring: VINO VOLTA - DIFFERENT SKINS 2020 TRIPE. ISCARIOT - ‘ABSOLUTION’ DANSE MACABRE 2020 LA KOOKI - ‘RIGHT SIDE OF RACY' CHARDONNAY 2019 DOMAINE NATURALISTE - ‘RACHIS’ SYRAH 2018 FAIRBROSSEN - ‘SIDE PROJECT WINES’ SAPERAVI 2018 EXPRESS WINEMAKERS - ROSE 2020
“I love this wine because it’s outrageously floral and exotic but has this really focused tension and grippy phenolics. A really thought-provoking example of Gewurztraminer and Frontignac. Vino Volta are definitely a producer to watch…”
Tripe. Iscariot - ‘Absolution’ Danse Macabre 2020
“Remi Guise is doing such good things at the moment. This is an unusual blend, but each grape plays its part and the result is charming stuff. Gentle, complex, textured and quite delicious. Super versatile food wine. Take it to dinner.”
Express Winemakers - Rose 2020
“Probably my favorite Rose that Ryan has done thus far. I paired this with wattleseed waffles and house made bacon at a brunch we held in Wildflower a few months ago and it was excellent. Texture for days and plenty of high tone, bright crunchy fruits.”
La Kooki - ‘Right Side of Racy' Chardonnay 2019
“La Kooki is a collection of small batch wines made by Ely & Glenn Goodall. They have a huge amount of talent between them and although made in tiny quantities they are worth seeking out. This Chardonnay is lean and taut with grapefruit pith and citrus tones and a sea spray/briny character. 100% Gin Gin clone from a single vineyard in Wallcliffe.”
Domaine Naturaliste - ‘Rachis’ Syrah 2018
“This is consistently one of the best examples of Shiraz out of Margaret River. Super ‘Rhone’ like in style. It has beautiful lifted aromatics, plenty of warm spice & supple texture from a portion of whole bunches in the ferment. The concentration here is quite incredible.”
Fairbrossen - ‘Side Project Wines’ Saperavi 2018
“The only wine of its kind in Western Australia – Saperavi is an 8000 year old Georgian grape variety. There are a small handful of young Saperavi vines grown in the Perth Hills which so far, seems like an ideal climate for this grape to thrive. Cherry cola, bitter chocolate, crushed herbs and spice. The naturally high levels of acidity in Saperavi offer freshness and vibrancy, alongside dusty fine tannins.”
